This is the first of what will most likely be a lot of paintings of scenes at Beyers Lake, where we recently bought our new home, and will be moving in a few months. This scene was captured by me in a photo taken from my kayak as we were leaving our home. We live on a little outlet of the lake, and so need to paddle a bit to get to the lake proper.
I am not totally happy with how it turned out, it is much too dark/too much black. I have not worked with pastels as much as other mediums. But the only art materials that I brought to the Pana house so far are my pastels – so when I am there, that is what I work with. My art studio there is not set up yet with proper lighting, so the dark is really more a reflection of the low lighting in the room and than the scene!
I also made the mistake (I think) of spraying with varnish when it was done. I usually don’t spray varnish over the fixative, and I think it made it even darker. But it did protect the pastel, which can be very delicate when trying to frame. So I may try sealing pastel this way again … maybe just on a lighter painting!
Thanks for looking!
